Trivia Night Report – Wendy’s Butterfly Garden

  • Posted on March 3, 2013 at 10:02 pm

Thank you to each person who had a part in making our first fundraiser of the year a success!  From set-up to tech to scoring to running answer sheets, each of our support staff was fantastic.  Each person and organization who donated an item for the raffle and silent auction is greatly appreciated.  And of course, the night would not be able to happen without each of you who invited friends and played trivia!  Congrats to the winning team who has already put the challenge out there on Facebook that they intend to defend the title in September!

Special thanks to each company and individual who donated raffle & auction items:

We owe a debt of gratitude to those who support Team Wendy and Wendy’s Butterfly Garden all the time.  We appreciate TWMedia.net who donates our web hosting and Jason Evans of Neon Dragon Tattoo who designed our logo.  And of course, we would not exist at all if it weren’t for the wonderful team at the Quad City Botanical Center!

Mark your calendars now for our next Trivia Night on September 14!

Thank you to each person who purchased a Village Inn Sweet Rewards pie card!  We sold 21 cards which raised just over $70 for the butterfly garden hosted at the Quad City Botanical Center.  We have turned those funds over to the center to pay for the butterflies that have already filled the enclosure this summer.

It’s break time for the butterflies right now, in the heat of the summer.  The butterfly enclosure will not be stocked for the next month or so, but will start back up again once temperatures drop a little.  In the meantime, keep watching this space for how you can help support the garden at our next fundraiser.

Butterflies & Apple Pie

  • Posted on June 23, 2012 at 12:15 am

This is the last week to purchase a Village Inn “Sweet Rewards” Pie card!  This card is good for one whole pie at any Village Inn or Baker’s Square restaurant throughout the United States.  The specific variety of pies included are listed on the back of the card, but in general it includes the fruit pies as well as their top-seller:  French Silk Pie.  Yummmm!

The cards are $12 each and a full $3.50 from each one purchased goes to help fund this season’s operation of the butterfly garden at the Quad City Botanical Center.  Please help us keep the beauty (and the memory) alive.

Purchase a pie card by clicking on the “Donate” tab above.  We’ll mail it to you within 24 hours of the payment clearing!

Quad City Botanical Center Butterfly Season Is Here!

  • Posted on June 11, 2012 at 11:45 pm

The butterflies are back!!

This past weekend marked the QC Botanical Center’s re-opening of Wendy’s Butterfly Garden.  Stop out and see them this month!

Now that we are into our second season with this endeavor, we have learned a few things and made some adjustments.  The staff at the botanical center recommended some changes in the way the butterfly garden is stocked, so that we can best use the funds to provide butterflies during the months that they will be most active and hardiest.  Rather than attempting to stock the garden throughout the hottest months of the summer when the butterflies are lethargic at best, this year the butterfly enclosure will be stocked in June and then again in September.  This will allow the funds to be distributed in a way that will provide the maximum enjoyment for attendees, plus will also allow school groups to utilize the enclosure for educational purposes in early fall.

Furthermore, the botanical center, in conjunction with several other Rock Island family attractions, is offering free admission on Mondays this summer.  This means that attendance will be higher on those days, which is great for allowing even more people to enjoy the enclosure.  There is a responsibility that comes with that, however.  The higher attendance requires the butterfly garden to be staffed, to ensure that doors remain closed so the critters don’t escape.

We talked with the staff at the center and they have agreed to allow us to volunteer several times a month on Mondays, freeing up the funds raised to purchase butterflies.  It also means that each one of us can be part of this garden and share with attendees the reason we care so much about it.  If you would be available to work a 2 or more hour volunteer shift one Monday during June or September, please let us know right away.  We’ll get you in contact with the proper people at the botanical center and they will make sure you have everything you need to keep you comfortable as you interact with people visiting the garden.

Stay cool this summer and stop in and see the butterflies!

Mother’s Day Memorial

One of Wendy’s favorite things in life was being a mom.  Wendy was the person who kept things running, kept things moving, kept kids’ activities in order, kept homework on time.  She worked full time and was a full time mom as well, and she juggled everything with grace and a sense of humor that never stopped.

The Butterfly Garden hosted at the Quad City Botanical Center was started in honor of this amazing woman because we wanted something permanent, beautiful, and useful to represent her memory.  The QC Botanical Center hosts the site and provides all the expertise to keep it running.  We at Team Wendy, through your donations, fund the project.  This requires new funding every season to purchase the butterflies that fill the enclosure.

We had a fantastic first season last year and want to make this butterfly season even better.  We’d like to have more butterflies than last year, especially for when the school children come through for educational purposes. In order to do this, we need to raise another $2700.  Our Trivia Night fundraiser brought in $1300, which is a fabulous start to the $4000 budget for this year, but we need your help.

At the top of this page is a tab called “Donations”, which will take you to a PayPal button where you can donate.  Would you consider a gift in Wendy’s honor as a Mother’s Day Memorial?  You can enter any amount you choose and use PayPal to deposit funds via electronic transfer or credit card payment.

Or how about buying your mother a Village Inn pie for her special day?!  We are now participating in Village Inn’s Sweet Rewards fundraising program.  With this program, you purchase a gift card for $12.00.  The card gives you your choice of one whole pie from the flavors listed on the back.  (French Silk, which is VI’s most popular pie, and the most expensive one listed on the card, would cost you $12.61 if rung up in the restaurant.)  Team Wendy and the butterfly garden receive $3.50 for each card, which is enough to purchase one butterfly for the enclosure.  The card is good at all Village Inn and Baker’s Square locations in the USA.

Check out the Donations tab and see how you can be involved.  Please help us fill the enclosure with butterflies, the symbol of hope, rebirth, and freedom.
